Its aimed at enthusiasts in technology, music, computergaming, film and tv - all of which have there own 'channels'. Here's the trailer:

Unsurprisingly, there's not masses of content up there yet - it is day one, after all - but it's still enough to get the idea of what's going to be on offer. Each channel has weekly episodes of its own flagship programmes, as well as interviews, news reports and packages from around the place. Its all highly-polished stuff and unashamedly modelled on tried and tested TV techniques. So on the technology channel, for example, we get Rory Reid's review of the Toyota Prius in a package that wouldn't look out of place on Top Gear. Likewise Andrew Lim's news report of the iPhone's arrival in London could grace any television news bulletin. Less slick (and less expensive) is the pair of silicon.com journalists discussing social networking - but you've still got to love that image quality.
What's perhaps surprising is that there's little evidence so far of huge innovation in the form that this wealth of content takes. That may come with time as CNET lets its people loose on some more experimental storytelling techniques.
Revenue will come from advertising - HP is signed up as exclusive launch sponsor - and sponsored links (including some from the BBC: are they allowed to spend our licence money on such things?) at the bottom of each video page.
Let's hope it'll be enough to pay for all that expensive production and on-screen talent.

Worth a look 16 Nov

Worth a look, 16 Nov

Crime map - bay area news [del.icio.us]

Posted: 16 Nov 2007 10:14 AM CST

An award-winning piece of multimedia interactivity from the Bay Area News Group.
[Transcript] As you can see I've had something of a makeover this week. Alright then a complete sex change. It's thanks to Sitepal, whose service allows me to get an animated character to do the work of my videoblog for me. I can change how I look, how I sound. I can even translate myself into languages I don't speak. Such as Japanese.
Or I can use my own voice, while taking on the guise of various current and former US presidents.
Thanks Bill. And by the way, I did not have sexual relations with that woman.
Sitepal services start at around a fiver a month. Which might even put it within in reach of the odd blogger. And most of them are odd, let's face it.

Right, not much time this week so just a couple of clips to show you. First is a recent winner from the National Press Photographer’s Association in the US, by Everett McEwan from KWGN-TV in Denver. The guys at Multimedia Shooter consider it their new benchmark for quality news video, and it's a superb example of great narrative editing.
It's just 2 minutes long, so do check out the full version to see whether there's a happy ending.

This week’s featured multimedia journalism project comes from News.com web site in Australia. It's called Culture in Crisis and is an impressive, detailed look, using audio slides, text and video, at how aboriginal people have been treated in the country and what the future holds for them.

Finally a warning from our health and safety department. Mobile technology can be an alluring concept, but you can take things too far. Unless you want to film a multiple pile up with yourself as the star, don't try this at home.

Flash marketing

A shameless bit of promotion for my work for the University of Kent.
Hi welcome to the (transcript of the) latest videolog featuring various bits of web video journalism from around the net. I'll start this week with serious plaudits for a serious piece of work from the Guardian. The newspaper's Katine Project is a highly ambitious attempt to transform the lives of people living in one of the poorest places on the planet, a village in rural Uganda.
It contains, as you would expect, news and blogs from the village highlighting different areas of its life. But there's also a fantastic rich interactive map - the virtual village - which brilliantly brings the sights and sounds of Katine to life.
It's probably the best piece of convergent journalism I’ve seen from a UK newspaper – or any newspaper for that matter - so far.

I've also been taking a look at Joost, the video on demand service from the people who brought Skype to the world. Now for a start I'm wary of anything which requires me to download a new application – my desktop's cluttered up with enough redundant rubbish as it is – but I bit the bullet with this one in the name of journalistic exploration. Joost has signed deals with some major journalism organisations, including Reuters and ITN. No sign of any ITN stuff yet, but Reuters is providing weekly entertainment and technology bulletins. Joost has a nice interface, but so far lacks enough really compelling content. Until there’s more to watch, any further visits will be hard to, er, joostify.

The Bristol Evening Post is part of an interesting new video project. It's streaming live video footage of meetings of the city council in a brave attempt to bring local democracy into readers homes. The Post reckons around 200 people tuned in for the first one, and the video remains available to watch afterwards on the site. But at 3 hours, I suggest you nip out for a packet of pro plus tablets first. Now what would really help is a Post journalist to edit it down into highlights so Bristoleans could find the bits that really interest them.

Ustream is a network that allows you to publish live streaming video on the internet.
So instead of producing this brilliantly crafted and immaculately edited videolog, I’d be able to talk to you in real time and you could contact me live to tell me what you think. Don’t think I’m quite ready for that yet – but I can certainly see some applications – conferences, for example – where it might come in handy.

Incidentally, new viewer Joshua pulled me up last week for not giving Kyte.tv a fair crack of the whip and opting instead for a cheap banana joke. Fair point. And actually I found myself watching some footage by tech blogger Robert Scoble on Kyte this week. So there is clearly more to it than fruit, and it is worth keeping an eye on.

Speaking of Scoble, I see that reports of his company’s demise were not just premature but downright falsehoods. I'm glad about that, not just because it shows there is a market for the one-man blogger and videoblogger, but also because it gives some great insight into technology that’s coming our way. Like this example:
That's Stanford Professor Marc Levoy who is working on a camera that allows you to refocus pictures long after you’ve taken them. I know a few Fleet Street snappers who'd pay good money for that.

Finally, here’s a couple of earnest young men debating the modern problem of information overload on Google Video (at about 8 mins 40)...
That's Marshall McLuhan and Norman Mailer, filmed in 1968. They should go far.

We apologise for the interruption in transmission

Yes, well it's been a while. I’d love to tell you what hugely important work has been keeping me from your screens, but you'll have to sign a non-disclosure agreement first. Just click the NDA button to the left and our team of lawyers will take one round to the local post office picket line.

My new academic stipend means I have a little more time to indulge myself, so I'm making an audacious bid to return to the vlogosphere. The plan, such as it is, will be to do a weekly video blog, along with a rough transcript containing the various links - which is what this is. And perhaps the occasional list of links to interesting video projects.

So what's been going on in the world of web video journalism in the intervening months? Well quite a lot actually. It’ll take me a while to catch up, so you’ll just have to forgive the fact that some of these examples may be a little long in the tooth.

One notable trend is the launch over the summer of a number of online tools to help the web video enthusiast. Some more compelling than others. Take kyte.tv, whose founder explains here what it's all about. Sort of. With the help of a banana. Is it me, or is he not quite convinced?

Also new – to me, anyway - is Friction TV, a UK site that specialises in video comment. It's the online equivalent of going down to speaker's corner to get harangued by opinionated loudmouths. Anyone can upload their ranting videos to the site, and its staff also have their own pet subjects, such as Project FreeSheet – a bid to close down the free London newspapers… including a familiar face collared for a vox pop at what looks like Waterloo Station. Note how Peter Snow has to cross his arms when he hasn’t got a swingometer to play with.

Like any journalist I'm always on the lookout for new ways to be lazy, so my antennae perked up when I saw this new search device featured on The Scoble Show. Spock.com is a new search engine that’s specifically set up to help you find information about people, as one of its boffins explains. I tried it out with a search on 'British Newspaper Owner' to see what it threw up. Three of the top four results were: Richard Desmond, Robert Maxwell and Conrad Black. Well they might be a perfect cross section of the good men and true who control our press – but I guess it demonstrates that spock.com has some way to go before it’s much use outside the states. By the way, you can take control of your own spock.com identity - which might make the search 'British journalism blogger' a bit less sparse. Just a thought.

So much for the technology, but how are the journalists out there faring?

It's one thing as a regional reporter to learn how to shoot and edit a bit of video for your paper’s web site. It's quite another to do the whole thing clinging on to the siderail of a round-the-world yacht. So it’s a full naval salute to the Hull Daily Mail's Jane Harper, who has just touched land in Brazil.

Now it also seems that there’s a new question for news editors to ask themselves. Namely, should you allow your reporters to sing? For the New York Times's David Pogue evidently asked and the answer was yes. His musical report on the launch of the iphone is now a cult classic. And he gets away with it – just - mainly thanks to some game volunteers he finds on the street. It's an erratic selection of shorts, and will probably end up rather blurred towards the end.

First up, I'm really grateful to cartoonist Matt Buck for this brilliant illustration of where many of us are at:

I probably go on about the Washington Post too much, but today they've revamped the web site to Increase Emphasis on Video. Always worth a look.
Meanwhile here's something it published a while ago. It's one of those cool uses of googlemaps that works beautifully. Clinton's Golden Voice Bill Clinton's Paid Speeches washingtonpost.com .

Via Andy Dickinson's blog, here's proof that radio journalists are also waking up to the power of web video: Why video is a must for radio stations

Martin Stabe reckons I'll eventually work out why he and others are so excited about Twitter, although it seems his argument may have taken a hit at the British Press Awards. Sorry Martin, but this graphic courtesy of Wired says it all for me...

Like many other people I followed the Scoble-hosted debate about the death of the newspaper. I also like this from Information Architects Japan: 10 Newspaper Myths Deconstructed

A completely irrelevant post for here, but I'm excited to find that the guy from Askaninja.com, one of the World's Finest Bits of Web Nonsense, is unmasked on a site called The Vloggies Show.
Actually it's not totally irrelevant. Ninja is a fantastic example of how a community can be built (and advertising dollars earned) from a simple idea, brilliantly executed, in which you involve the audience all the way along.

Now here's a great bit of regional journalism storytelling from the Bay Aread News Group in the US. Ripples of a Homicide tells the story from multiple angles of the death of a 23-year-old local man, using audio, stills photography and video. It allows the users to pick their way through the story of how an apparently unremarkable death impacts on family, friends and the wider community. Beutifully done. I'll try to squeeze it on to my next videoblog. There's something similar, although not quite so complex, here: Democrat & Chronicle: Audio Slideshow

This sounds encouraging: Online videos pull in ad money - Editors Weblog. Although by contrast, here's the story of how Rocketboom (one of the web's apparently most successful videocasts) is finding the commercial going tough despite having 200k daily viewers.

I found this little tutorial pretty useful. Particularly now I've discovered the joys of the H264 codec... MultimediaShooter » The Dark Art of video compression

An explanation from Silicon Valley Sleuth: Broadband finally gets its killer app on the power of video.

Frederator has been a regular on my video ipod for months, but I've only just discovered that the people behind it have other web shows too, including Threadbanger, Fast Lane Daily and PulpSecret. Worth keeping an eye on to see whether web 'formats' can really take off: next new networks: our networks

And finally I've just discovered a whizzy little start-up called Mixpo, which I'm testing out for my next videoblog. It might just save me having to relearn Flash...

Oh and by the way, it took the Guardian a further 24 hours or so to work out how to post the video (see post below) on to the relevant page. But they got there eventually. Perhaps some of their £1m video investment will be spent teaching the 'cut' and 'paste' commands...

Guardian video/vlog#4

This week's vlog is a bit of a cheat. Anyway, I'm posting it here too as this week's videoblog.

It features:
Friendly Fire cockpit video - The Sun (click on ‘see moment brits were hit’ in right hand menu.)

Red Hot Rails - San Jose Mercury News

Travis Fox's Darfur report - Washington Post

Challenge Lup - The Sun

Daily Telegraph

New York Times

Vlog#3

The difficult' third videolog is now live here.
Featuring:

Comic Relief
Belfast Telegraph TV
Welwyn and Hatfield Times
Nottingham Evening Post
Ananova (sort of)
Twittervision
and ZeFrank

Audio clean-up

I'm having some technical difficulties with the sound-track to a video I'm working on for a client. I didn't have my external microphone on for one bit of footage, and so the only audio is from the camera's built-in mic. The result is there's a horrible background buzz that's really intrusive. The award-winning 'backpack journalist' has just returned from Darfur and produced a powerful report featuring video and some amazing panoramic stills. It's really worth a look, not just for the story itself but also for the quality of presentation that the Washington Post brings to this kind of interactive feature. I haven't yet come across a publisher or broadcaster that's doing it better.
I've featured Fox's work both here and in the videoblog already. More grit, more edge, your grandfather would not understand it type of thing. Arty. Like a quaint one of coffee shop. Not starbucks. Edgy. The story is told, but not by the numbers like the TV dudes are used to doing.Technically I am sure the best TV Journalists are better at this, than I can ever hope to be. I would hope I am a much better print photojournalist than they are. But both mediums are losing to a changing market place. A hyper fragmented market place, so they don't have the answers either. All will be lost if we end up doing TV on the web. It has to be more like short film. Maybe they would like us to do stand up interviews in front of a darkened courthouse under streetlights in the snow. I guess my bottom line is its not TV and never will be. This is why I have never got bogged down in the whole contest thing. Its all about a couple peoples tastes. The public will be your judge.

The winners from the video photography category are listed here
http://www.nasites.net/projects/1296/newsfeatureweb.asp
And it's certainly well worth taking a look at the winner of the news feature section, from the Washington Post, here. It's quite something. I'll be featuring this in the next vlog - which i hope to do tomorrow (once I've got through a vast mountain of judging of my own, from the rather more linear PPA awards).
